Pic- tures taken at slow shutter speeds are adjusted to im- prove quality, slightly increasing processing time. Camera settings are automatically adjusted to suit the selected scene, spar- ing you the necessity of adjusting each setting separately.
To take pictures in scene mode, rotate the mode dial to and follow the steps below: Display scene menu. It takes more time than usual to store the picture.
Page 47 Close up Use to capture vivid colors in close-up shots of flowers, insects, and other small objects, with the background artistically blurred. Page 48 Fireworks show Slow shutter speeds are used to capture the expanding burst of light from a firework.

Choose negative values when large areas of the frame are very dark for example, when photographing a forest of dark green leaves or when the background is much darker than the main subject. Page Movies Movies Selects Movie Types In the movie mode, the following settings in the movie menu can be selected according to the purpose of playback.
Option Movies are recorded at 30 frames per TV movie second. Page 60 Rotate mode dial to Highlight option. Auto-focus Mode for Recording Movies The setting for Autofocus in the movie mode can be set in Auto-focus mode in the shooting menu.

Playback controls are displayed at the top of the monitor; press to highlight a control, then press selected operation. The human brain is able to adapt to such changes in color, with the result that we see white objects as white, regard- less of whether they are in the shade, direct sunlight, or under incandescent lighting. Page The Memory Buffer The camera is equipped with a memory buffer for temporary storage, allowing shooting to continue while photographs are being saved to the memory card.
Up to photographs can be taken in succession; note, however, that frame rate will drop when the buffer is full. While photographs are being recorded to the memory card, the memory card access lamp will light 0 Mount the camera on a tripod. Page Flash Compensation Flash Compensation Flash compensation is used to alter flash output from the level suggested by the camera, changing the brightness of the main subject relative to the background. The flash compensation selected with the optional flash unit is added to the flash compensation selected with the camera.
Use for high contrast scenes, for example when photographing brightly lit outdoor scenery through a door or window or taking pictures of shaded subjects on a sunny day. Uneven shading may be visible with some subjects. A setting of Y Auto is equivalent to Q Normal in mode M or when center-weighted or spot metering is used. HDR is most effective when used with L Matrix metering 0 62; with other metering methods, a setting of v Auto is equivalent to T Normal. Page Frame a photograph, focus, and shoot.
The camera takes two exposures when the shutter-release button is pressed all the way down. HDR turns off automatically after the photograph is taken; Page Multiple Exposure Multiple Exposure Follow the steps below to record a series of two or three exposures in a single photograph.
Multiple exposures produce colors noticeably superior to those in software-generated photographic overlays created from existing images. Page Choose the number of shots. Highlight Number of shots and press 2. The dialog shown at right will be displayed. Press 1 or 3 to choose the number of exposures that will be combined to form a single photograph and press J.
Choose the amount of gain. A multiple exposure will be created from the exposures that have been recorded to that point. Page White Balance White Balance White balance ensures that colors are unaffected by the color of the light source. Auto white balance is recommended for most light sources; in P, S, A, and M modes, other values can be selected if necessary according to the type of source: Option Description Automatic white balance adjustment.

Display white balance options. Page Preset Manual Preset Manual Preset manual is used to record and recall custom white balance settings for shooting under mixed lighting or to compensate for light sources with a strong color cast. Two methods are available for setting preset white balance: Method Description Neutral gray or white object is placed under lighting that will be used in final photo Measure Page Measure white balance. Before the indicators stop flashing, frame the reference object so that it fills the viewfinder and press the shutter-release button all the way down.
No photograph will be recorded; white balance can be measured accurately even when the camera is not in focus. Check the results. Page Measuring Preset White Balance If no operations are performed while the displays are flashing, direct measurement mode will end in the time selected for Custom Setting c2 Auto off timers; 0 The default setting is eight seconds.
Preset White Balance The camera can store only one value for preset white balance at a time; Select Preset manual. To display the menus, press the G button. Highlight White balance in the shooting menu and press 2 to display white balance options. Choose in situations in which it is difficult to set exposure or white balance and there is not time to check results and adjust settings with each shot, or to experiment with different settings for the same subject.
Page Display bracketing options. Highlight the current bracketing setting and press J. Select a bracketing increment. Highlight a bracketing increment and press J.
Choose from values between 0. During ADL bracketing, the setting that will be used for the next shot is underlined in the information display. In P, S, A, and M modes, you can choose a Picture Control according to the subject or type of scene in other modes, the camera selects a Picture Control automatically.
Choose a balanced combination of settings using Quick adjust, or make manual adjustments to individual settings. Display the Picture Control menu. Quick adjust For example, choosing positive values for Vivid makes pictures more vivid.
Not available with Neutral, Monochrome, or custom Picture Controls. Page The Picture Control Grid Pressing the X button in Step 3 displays a Picture Control grid showing the contrast and saturation for the selected Picture Control in relation to the other Picture Controls only contrast is displayed when Monochrome is selected.
Release the X button to return to the Picture Control menu. Select Manage Picture Control. Highlight Manage Picture Control in the shooting menu and press 2. Page Name the Picture Control. The text-entry dialog shown at right will be Keyboard displayed. By default, new Picture Controls area are named by adding a two-digit number Name area assigned automatically to the name of the existing Picture Control; to use the default name, proceed to Step 7.
Page Sharing Custom Picture Controls Sharing Custom Picture Controls Custom Picture Controls created using the Picture Control Utility available with ViewNX 2 or optional software such as Capture NX 2 can be copied to a memory card and loaded into the camera, or custom Picture Controls created with the camera can be copied to the memory card to be used in compatible cameras and software and then deleted when no longer needed.
Rotate the live view switch. The mirror will be raised and the view through the lens will be displayed in the camera monitor. The subject will no longer be visible in the viewfinder. Page Using Autofocus in Live View Autofocus is slower in live view and the monitor may brighten or darken while the camera focuses. The mirror is raised and the view through the lens is displayed in the monitor instead of the viewfinder.
The 0 Icon A 0 icon 0 97 indicates that movies can not be recorded. Page End recording. Press the movie-record button again to end recording. Recording will end automatically when the maximum length is reached, the memory card is full, another mode is selected, the lens is removed, or the monitor is closed closing the monitor does not end recording on televisions or other external displays.
Taking Photographs During Movie Recording To end movie recording, take a photograph, and exit to live view, press the shutter-release button all the way down and hold it in this position until the shutter is released. Page Movie Settings Movie Settings Use the Movie settings option in the shooting menu to adjust the following settings. Shutter speed can be set to values as fast as s; the slowest speed available varies with the frame rate: s for frame rates of 24p, 25p, and 30p, Page Viewing Movies Viewing Movies Movies are indicated by a 1 icon in full-frame playback 0 Press J to start playback.
Delete frames. If the desired frame is not currently displayed, press 4 or 2 to advance or rewind to skip to 10 s ahead or back, rotate the command dial. Page Trimming Movies Movies must be at least two seconds long. If a copy can not be created at the current playback position, the current position will be displayed in red in Step 5 and no copy will be created. The copy will not be saved if there is insufficient space available on the memory card. Play the movie back as described on page ; your approximate position in the movie can be ascertained from the movie progress bar.
Shooting with Special Effects The following effects can be selected by rotating the mode dial to q and rotating the command dial until the desired option appears in the monitor.
